Darbuka Arabic

Provides 1,944 hours of Arabic speech, with a focus on Egyptian and Saudi dialects. Each clip includes three ASR hypotheses, a consensus transcript, and audio-quality metrics for speech recognition and synthesis research.

Introduction

A large speech corpus can look like a ready-made training set, but its most useful feature here is that it exposes disagreement rather than hiding it. Across 943,731 short clips, three recognizers produce separate transcripts alongside a consensus, letting researchers inspect uncertainty and filter data instead of treating every transcript as ground truth.

What Sets It Apart
  • The collection covers 1,944 hours of speech, with Egyptian and Saudi Arabic emphasized; its scale makes it useful for training and evaluating speech systems beyond small, single-speaker corpora.
  • Audar, Cohere, and Jais outputs are retained alongside a PriorityROVER consensus. Their agreement scores help form subsets by recognizer consistency, but agreement is not proof of transcript accuracy.
  • Per-clip audio measures include DistillMOS and other quality indicators. The reported 98.01% of audio hours scoring at least 3.0 on DistillMOS offers a useful starting point for quality filtering, not a guarantee that every clip is suitable.
  • Audio is provided as FLAC at its original 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate, and the roughly 885 GB collection can be streamed. This reduces the need to download everything before inspection, though full-scale use still requires substantial storage or bandwidth.
Who It Suits—and the Trade-off

A good fit for teams exploring Arabic ASR or TTS, especially those who want dialect coverage and metadata for selecting clips by quality or transcript agreement. Look elsewhere if you need human-verified reference transcripts, a clearly permissive commercial license, or audio limited to a single dialect: transcripts are ASR-derived, dialect labels are inferred, and commercial access is offered separately. The dataset card says source recordings were collected under CC BY 3.0 or 4.0, while the dataset itself has a separate license.
