Most AI assistants treat every prompt as a fresh transaction. The harder problem is keeping work moving across days: preserving context, splitting a goal into manageable tasks, and getting the right tool to finish each one. Orkas is designed around that continuity, with a Commander coordinating agents and returning completed work for review.
What Sets It Apart
- One plan, multiple workers: The Commander can handle general tasks or delegate parts to 16 built-in specialists and supported CLI agents. This lets a project combine research, coding, content, and media work without treating each as a separate workflow.
- Persistent project context: Goals, rules, files, memory, and to-dos carry across conversations. Auto-advance and scheduled runs help routine work continue without a new prompt each time, provided the computer is awake and the app is running.
- Local-first, model-flexible design: Data and custom agents stay on disk by default, while users can choose the managed model, their own provider keys, or a local compatible endpoint. This offers control over model choice, but does not mean every model call is offline or that the packaged app has no cloud services.
- Deliverables over chat alone: Its specialists produce files and outputs such as reports, presentations, code, and media, with review points and confirmation for consequential connector actions.
Who It’s For—and the Trade-Off
A good fit for people or small teams with recurring, cross-functional work who want agents to share project context and produce reviewable deliverables. Look elsewhere if you only need a lightweight chatbot or a code library to embed in an application. Orkas is a desktop orchestrator, so it depends on a running computer for automations; collaboration, cloud sync, and web-app publishing are limited to the packaged app.
